Codis Simmons was Born to George Simmons Sr. and Willie Mae Harrison on November 11, 1939, in a sleepy little town in Northeast Texas called Roxton, TX.
Codis received his early education in Paris, TX and graduated from Carver High School in Midland, TX. He studied Art and played baseball at Texas Southern University before joining the United States Army in 1962, where he served for 2 years. Upon his honorable discharge from the army, Codis followed his older brother George out West and made Las Vegas, NV his home. Codis married Johnnie Posey and this union produced two children, Stacey, and Christopher Simmons. While working at Timet in Henderson, NV, Codis decided to attend Clark County Community College where he completed a degree in Fire Science. He then became employed by the City of Las Vegas Fire Department as a Firefighter from 1972 until his retirement in 2000. While on duty with the Fire Department, Codis became the preferred cook at every firehouse he was stationed at. The running rule at Station 3 (where he retired from), was, whenever they had to go on a run and it was close to dinner time, the other Firefighters would tell Codis to stay back so they could eat when they returned. Codis’s meals became famous throughout the entire department. Codis was also known for the amazing soul food he prepared for his infamous house parties. Codis acquired his love for cooking from his grandmother Bessie Mama and his love for barbequing from his stepfather Bennie Harrison. Codis was a longtime, avid golfer, and you could find him on the golf course rain or shine. If there was one thing Codis lived by, it was to enjoy life.
Codis, affectionately known as Daddy to his children, Papa to his grandchildren and Unkie to his nephews and nieces, departed this earth, but not our hearts on May 27, 2023. His legacy as a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend will always be remembered.
Codis was preceded in death by his parents, George Simmons Sr. and Willie Mae Harrison and his stepfather Bennie Harrison. He leaves to celebrate his life 2 children: Stacey and Christopher Simmons.
