Las Vegas, NV

Thank you for taking the time to visit Michael's online obituary page. Please feel free to share memories, and sign the online guest book below!

Michael Anthony Garrett, affectionately known as “Bombay”, was born on November 12, 1962, in Las Vegas, NV to Fulton Garrett, Sr. and Mary Garrett (Smith). He was the youngest of six children. Michael obtained his education in the Clark County School District where he graduated from Clark High School.

Michael grew up attending Grace Immanuel Baptist Church where he was active with the YPTO (Young Peoples Training Organization), a youth guidance program under the counsel of Ms. Juanita Cruise and Ms. Minnie Scott. As a child, he had a larger-than-life personality that continued throughout his adulthood. After graduating from Clark High School, Michael attended Grambling State University and later UNLV where he was involved in various social and civic organizations.

As an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Michael was best known for his work as advisor and mentor with the Las Vegas Kappa Leadership League (The Elite Chapter). The Las Vegas Kappa League chapter was founded in the Fall of 1989 by Lawrence Weekly and Michael Garrett with the purpose of preparing young men to become leaders of impact and influence and to discover their unique skills and abilities in order to fulfill their purpose in life. In the Spring of 1990, Phase 1 began and since its inception, The League has earned local, state and national recognition, along with awards for outstanding community service and academic achievement. The League has also produced numerous, exceptional young men who have gone on to become Elected Officials, Pastors, Professional Athletes, Lawyers, Doctors, Entrepreneurs, Educators, Entertainers, as well as many other careers. Michael was the type to give all of himself and leave nothing behind. He poured encouragement and self-worth into many young men that not only changed their lives but changed how they saw the community at large.

Michael became a member of Victory Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Robert Fowler and now current Pastor Sean A. Taylor. Michael was a member of the usher board and he truly enjoyed his church home!

Michael started his career in the Clark County School District in 1991. He worked at a variety of Elementary, Middle and High Schools before ultimately becoming a Community Advocate at Canyon Springs High School. In addition, Michael also worked with Safe Key for the City of Las Vegas for many years. Michael was adored by the students, faculty and staff of CCSD.

Michael certainly made his mark in the school district by adding his signature touch on everything he did…from decorating school events (you always knew when it was a Bombay event) to decorating his office and playing music for the students when they entered the school doors on Friday mornings.

Michael was also an entrepreneur, and self-taught florist. He created some of the most unique and exquisite floral designs anyone has ever seen. You knew when you were in possession of a Bombay Floral creation because it provided a level of elegance that was simply unmatched.

Michael was a father figure to many but an actual father to only one. His proudest moment was the adoption of his son, Jadon House last year. Michael lived for Jadon’s happiness! They enjoyed discovering new dining spots just about every weekend, attending church, going to social events and traveling to California to visit family. The best part of each of their days was when Michael picked Jadon up from school and they could share their days with each other. Parenthood is not easy, but being a single parent is another level of commitment. Michael was prepared for that commitment.

Michael was a giver and he devoted his life to helping young people believe in themselves and succeed. Michael will truly be missed, but his amazing legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched and the people he loved.

Michael was preceded in death by his father Fulton Garrett, Sr., mother Mary Garrett (Smith), brother Johnnie Garrett, brother Fulton Garrett, Jr., sister Carolyn Shelton (Curtis), sister Barbara Coleman, and nephew Anthony Shelton.

Michael leaves to cherish his memories: his son Jadon House, sister Patricia Garrett (Alonzo), nephew Allen Shelton (Wendy), nephew Ronnie Hoye, nephew Taylor Coleman, great niece Riley Hoye, brother-in-law Curtis Shelton, Lawrence Weekly and Family, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
